Current Research Projects

Alkontrol-herbal

We have been studying the effects of Alkontrol-herbal for nearly 20 years for its ability to reduce alcohol consumption. We conducted a NIH funded clinical trial of Alkontrol-herbal versus placebo.

Before the study started, the participants drank an average of 35 alcoholic beverages per week and abstained from drinking, on average, 1.8 consecutive days. After only 3 weeks of treatment with Alkontrol-herbal, the number of drinks dropped to ~10 per week (Figure 1) and the participants extended the number of consecutive NO drinking days to 4 in a row (Figure 2).

Participants wore a wrist actigraphy watch to record their sleep/wake activity and they could press a marker button whenever they had a drink or took the double-blind medication. The analysis of these data revealed that the pattern of drinking was affected by Alkontrol-herbal. Figure 3 shows the sleep/wake activity and actual drinks consumed (arrows) over a three-day weekend by a typical participant at Baseline and during the 4th week of treatment with Kudzu. Note that the number of binge drinking days was decreased and the number of drinks per binge was also smaller. The red dots represent the times when the Kudzu dose was taken. These positive outcomes occurred with no reported side effects. A full report of all study results was published in a scientific journal*.

HLXL (Completed Phase II Trial for Osteoarthritis)

A classical Chinese herbal formula, Huo Luo Xiao Ling Dan, is commonly used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine to treat “Bi syndrome”, as arthritis is known. It consists of four herbs, Ru Xiang (Boswellia carterii Birdw.), Mo Yao (Commiphora myrrha Engl.), Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels) and Dan Shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.). Its main actions are to promote circulation, alleviate pain and reduce swelling.

We have substantially improved classical Huo Luo Xiao Ling Dan according to the principles of Chinese herbology by adding eight other herbs that have shown benefits for arthritis patients in clinic (and eliminating Mo Yao, which has the same function as Ru Xiang). These eight new herbs traditionally have also been used for “Bi syndrome” to promote blood circulation and relieve pain.

HLXL has currently completed a Phase II clinical trial at Kernan Hospital of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. NPI is the exclusive provider of HLXL used in the Phase II clinical trial.

The time course of the anti-hyperalgesic effects of four different dosages of HLXL given daily for 7 days, starting one day prior to CFA. PWL of CFA-inflamed hind paw was measured immediately before (I) and 1 hour after (II) herbal administration. Values are mean ± SE (n = 8/group). *p < 0.05, **p < 0.01 compared to the vehicle control.
